Kintsugi 金継ぎ

Kintsugi 金継ぎ

During my last trip to Tokyo, I realized that I can broke dishes and use kintsugi to fix them.

Kintsugi  金継ぎ: golden joinery

It's the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique (Japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder as a decoration).

I decided to try it on a bowl.

The kit to repare it, you need:

- ceramic glue

- paste to stuff eventually small holes

- gold (in flake)

- a tinny brush

First, if it's necessary, stuff the holes. And wait until it's completely dry. Sand down to make it regular.

Then, apply the glue and fix all the parts of the bowl back together.

It's time for gold. With a tiny brush, put the gold on the glue. Work the joints to make a thin golden thread.

It's done.
